Dungeness crab legs. The bay and estuary of the Dungeness River supports waterfowl, waders, shellfish, and harbor seals. It sits on Britain’s only desert—a rare shingle landscape that supports a remarkable variety of plant and insect life. Dungeness is one of six refuges in the Washington Maritime National Wildlife Refuge Complex. It lies within the civil parish of Lydd. Dungeness's name means "the headland at Denge", referring to nearby Denge Marsh. A network of lands set aside specifically for wildlife, the System is our living heritage, conserving wildlife and habitat for generations to come. Dungeness is a place steeped in history and mystery. The refuge provides habitat for more than 250 species of birds [7] and 41 species of land mammals. Dungeness spans Dungeness Nuclear Power Station, the hamlet of Dungeness, and an ecological site at the same location.
